    Hearts and Hands 2009 - 2010

Hearts and Hands coordinates Centre Pieces Quilt Guild's community service quilt projects.

The guild currently donates quilts for local charities and people in need, Toys for Tots, and Second Mile. In recent years, the guild has provided a baby quilt to the local Greater Pennsylvania Alzheimer's Association (see below), The Women's Concern Clinic, twelve or more quilts to Centre Crest Nursing Home, several bed and lap quilts for the Magic Foundation auction, three lap quilts to Habitat for Humanity , quilts to the American Lung Association, a quilt for Artistic Horizons, and more than one hundred doll quilts each year to Toys for Tots. The guild also sponsors a family each year at Christmas with presents and other goodies.

Contact Chris Miller with any general Hearts and Hands questions or suggestions.
Contact Jule Weaver with questions or donations for Toys for Tots.

A work session is planned for October 22, from 1 pm to 4:30 pm.,

Theme for 2008-2009: Children's Quilts

Thirty-five quilts were donated.

Theme for 2007-2008 was "Quilts of Valor"
"Quilts of Valor" is an organization that provides quilts for soldiers wounded in combat.
See the web site http://qovf.org/ for more information.
Finished quilts are preferred, but quilt tops will be accepted if batting, backing, and binding are provided.
Quilts must be sent in a pillowcase.
The minimum size accepted is 50 inches by 60 inches, and the maximum is 63 inches by 87 inches.
Patriotic themes are recommended.
Block of the Month donated the blocks made each month to Hearts and Hands and Quilts of Valor.

Theme for 2005-2006 was Kid Fancy

05-06's theme was "Kid Fancy," with a special push for Toys for Tots and other local children's groups. The selected pattern was Amish Diamondfrom Quilter's Cache. The center of the block was fussy cut from children's fabric or something fun. The rest of the block was a coordinating bright prints and solids for a 12" block. There were lots of wild and crazy fabrics that made you and the children smile.

2004-2005's Hearts and Hands block of the year was "Memory."

The pattern and instructions were available at the chapter meetings or from quilterscache.com. Over forty members of the quild contributed blocks for the Memory Quilt, which was made at the request of the local Greater Pennsylvania Alzheimer's Association. The queen size was made of fabric purchased at Stitch Your Art Out in Pine Grove Mills, and machine quilted by Barbara Dann of Alley Cat Quiltworks in Bellefonte. The quilt was raffled off Sunday, October 16th at the Alzheimer's Association Memory Walk at the Military Museum in Boalsburg and displayed Saturday at the Guild Show at the South Hill School of Business and Technology. Look here Memory Quilt winner for a picture of the happy winner, who has a family member with Alzheimer's. The money will be used by the local chapter for a variety of needs, including counseling, training and support groups for families. If you have questions about the local Alzheimer's Association, or would like to get involved or volunteer, contact Shirley Springman at 237-2550.
