Challenge 2024/2025

Becky S
The annual guild picnic on Tuesday was a success of gigantic proportion! There was so much yummy food, great conversation, a visit from the 'kitty', and, of course, the unveiling of our completed challenge quilts!  Check out the quilts and their makers below. Voting was fierce for the best challenge quilt with coins being tossed this way and that! Congratulations Peggy R for first place, Zak K for second place, and Lenore for the third place. So much beautiful eye candy here! And thank you Zak, for the challenge!

Summer UFO Challenge

We will be having our summer UFO challenge again this year.  Pick your favorite, least favorite, oldest, or a project that needs some motivation to GET ‘ER DONE. Sign your project contract and put $5 in the Kitty at your next meeting. She’ll hold it until the September day and evening meetings. If you fulfil your contract and show your project at one of these meetings Kitty will return your money back. If it’s still a UFO, she’ll give your $5 to the program committee. She realizes belatedly (now that her eyes are getting old) that she needs to attend both meetings.

Wednesday Meeting - May 21 - Sewing Workshop

Join us at 1 PM for a sewing workshop at Pine Hall Lutheran Church.  The hall will be open at 12:30 for setup.  We are hoping to assemble lots of fronts and backs for charity quilts, but you are welcome to bring your 2 1/2" strip project as well.  We need 5-6 sewing machines, so bring yours if you can, but we also need people to iron, pin, cut and trim, etc., so bring your sewing supplies.  DianeG will be bringing her AccuCutter to cut your fabric into accurate strips for that project you've been inspired to start (or finish!).

Tuesday Evening Meeting - May 13 - Strip Patterns

We will meet at 6:30 (social), 7 PM for the meeting at Blue Course Community Church for a program on projects using 2 1/2" strips.  In addition to some videos of techniques, please bring any projects  and tips you have for using strips.  Think more than jelly roll or potato chip blocks.  Such as Hip to be Square, String Ribbons, String X, Step in Time, etc.

Also, bring any projects for Sew & Tell, not just your strip projects.

Comfort Covers Distribution UPDATED with pictures

This week 15 care centers in Centre County will receive Comfort Covers made by all of you.

IrisM and MargaretM were a great duo at counting all the items being delivered per facility. BeckyT helped get labeled tops into the correct piles around the room. I'm thinking there were more, but maybe they just worked really hard?

Drivers included BeckyS, MargaretM, IrisM, BarbZ, JillW, LindaU, DianeG, LeslieD, and LenoreC.

We collected 181 items, not including the 9 saved out for Toys for Tots in November. We saved back some walker bags but distributed 48 of them.

We only had 3 fidget quilts, and one site had requested 4 of them. Anticipate a maker day in the summer to fidget! Feel free to play on your own. There are directions on the website, but basically a piece of fabric placemat size that wouldn't slide off someone's lap. Then add textures, things to move back and forth, keys, ruffles, lace, zippers, etc. High functioning can manipulate large buckles, large zippers, marble races. Lower functioning should focus on differences in texture: smooth, scratchy, furry, moveable, bumpy, crinkly (cereal bag or bubble wrap inside something). Your lace piece is only 7 " long, but you've saved it? Time to use it😉

Many thanks to all who made something. The next collection is in October.

Quilt in Public Day - March 22 - Schlow Library Community Room UPDATED with pictures

Join us on Saturday, March 22, from 10-4 to learn about quilting and the Centre Pieces Quilt Guild.  There will be rotating demonstrations by Guild members during the day using a variety of machines (embroidery, feather weight, mini, "regular", an Accu-cutter, maybe a serger??) as well as hand work (applique, bindings, etc.)  Quilters love to talk about what they're working on and the fabric/thread/technique they like best to use.  We look forward to meeting you!

Wednesday Daytime Meeting - March 19 - Pin Cushion Share

Join us at Pine Hall Lutheran Church on College Avenue in State College at 1 PM for our Wednesday meeting.

Bring your favorite pin cushion - inherited, made, purchased, or given.  There is also an opportunity to make a pincushion.  DianeG will bring her AccuQuilt machine to cut out pincushions; bring fabrics of choice. More details on the workshop website page.

Pin Cushion Pattern
Materials
1 piece of fabric approx 14 in by 4 in
2 pieces of fabric 5 in by 5 in
1 piece of wool, felt, or fabric backed by a fusible
5 in by 5 in for applique (Some wool will be available at the meeting.)
Ground walnut shells can be used for the “stuffing.” Some will be available at the meeting .
The finished pin cushion is 3in by 2 in by 3 in
The Accuquilt die will be used to cut one long rectangle for the sides, two squares for the top and bottom. The wool or felt will be cut into a spool of thread and a sewing machine for applique.
Sewing instructions: Applique the sewing machine and spool to the top and bottom. Buttons or other embellishments can be added. Right sides together, sew the short ends of the long rectangle together, ¼ in seam. There are notches in the long rectangle. The sides of the squares match the notches with a ¼ in allowance for the seam. Right sides together, sew the top to the rectangle. Sew the bottom to the rectangle. The seam should be centered on one of the sides of the pincushion top/bottom so that the corners will line up. Leave a one inch opening along one of the seams to fill the pincushion. Turn the pincushion right sides out. Fill. Sew the seam closed with a ladder stitch.
