Comfort Covers Collection Report

On a rainy Saturday a hardy core of volunteers gathered to size, label, sort and deliver the donations inside Centre County. WendyN, BeckyS, BeckyT, JillA, PeggyT, and Pat worked hard. Pat went home to get a second iron, and Lenore went home to make more labels. We were out of the building by 11:30

Thank you to those who made donations since the last collection day in July. Without your ongoing support for this guild project, we would not be able to continue this mission. LenoreC is the coordinator for Comfort Covers. It would be impossible for her to make all these lovely covers.

We are delivering this week 14 bed toppers, 17 lap blankets, 16 small lap, 31 walker/wheelchair bags, 21 fabric dignity protectors, 17 dress shirt dignity protectors, 28 covers for Toys for Tots, 5 hats, and 4 items to the House of Hope Mommy Shop. Our destinations include 7 senior care facilities, Out of the Cold (un-housed) , The Haven (teens), The Meadows (psych hospital), and Park Forest Nursery School.  That's over 150 people receiving something to bring them comfort, and maybe a little joy.

If so, let Barb Zeger or Becky Trunzo know. Hope you come… it should be fun and helpful when you shop Scraps and Skeins or any quilt store.

Meeting begins at 1 PM at Pine Hall Lutheran Church on W College Avenue.

Tueday Evening Meeting - The Great UFO Reveal - September 12

Tuesday, September 12 at Blue Course Community Church.  Social time starts at 6:30 with the meeting starting a 7 PM.  UFO = Unfinished Fabric Object

You challenged yourself to reach a goal. Bring your finished projects to reveal. Will the “Kitty” return your $5.00 entry fee for completing the task you signed up for, or will your $5.00 go into the Guild's “Kitty” if you just couldn't find the time to reach your goal? No judgment here.

Strip Poker...Well, kind of... but you don't need to layer up with extra clothing or bring money. Bring 4 WOF 2 1/2” strips of Winter holiday themed fabric to play with. (We will have some WOF strips to share if you don't have those fabrics or forget yours) A few lucky winners will take home a collection of fabric strips ready to turn into gifts. (Judy Ray's “Hidden Wells” technique would be a great way to use them!)

Show and Tell...Incentive to get a project or two completed!

Comfort Covers / Toys for Tots Update

Due to all your efforts we are distributing to 6 area Senior Residence Communities, The Meadows, the Youth Services Bureau, a nursery school, and Toys for Tots:

    Small lap 15 (4 Crochet, 11 quilted)

    Lap 28 (13 Crochet, 15 quilted)

    Bed Topper 14 (4 Crochet, 14 quilted)

    Walker bags 5

    Other: 1 pair child mittens

Toys for Tots: 18 (3 Crochet, 15 quilted)

The next Collection date will be October 7, Pine Hall Lutheran Church, from 10-11 (Note the time change!). It really helped speed the process by having your covers sized. Please, no covers smaller than 40x40. Laundered items are preferred to remove pet dander, "carrying around the cover while working on it" soil, and for quilters--- to check seam/ binding integrity and fabric bleeding.

September 19 at QBs and the 22nd at UFO Fridays there will be sewing sessions to make Dignity Protectors, fidget quilts and walker bags. Bring your sewing machine and BSS (Basic Sewing Supplies). These are the items most requested by the Senior care facilities. The patterns are on the website, and will also be available at the sewing sessions. Lenore has some kits available, if you want to have a head start.

The Embassy at Hearthside has requested a larger fidget quilt for their Life Engagement area, 36-40 ish inches. Putting on my nursing cap, these were called reality orientation boards, in my day. If anyone would like to work with me on this special project, please let me know.

The ladies of Comfort Covers will also be donating $65 to the Pine Hall Church for the use of their space on our collection days. Thank you for all your contributions in labor, time, creativeness, and cash.

If you are affiliated with a faith or service organization that provides items similar to what we make, please let LenoreC know so that we don't duplicate efforts. On the other hand, if you know of a need that Comfort Covers could fill, please share it with the group. We are aware that a church provides hats, sweaters, and mittens for Park Forest. Another church makes fleece blankets for the dialysis center.

We call them fidget quilts. Some call them touch quilts. Here’s an interesting article about how beneficial they are. https://fftimes.com/news/local-news/the-benefits-of-a-touch-quiltfor-those-living-with-alzheimers/

Summer UFO Kitty Challenge

Summer UFO Kitty Challenge contract is here.

Make a goal and a plan to work on a UFO this summer. Bring it to the September 12 evening meeting for Show and Tell. The goal may be to get the flimsy done, or to get it to the long-armer, or maybe just to get to instruction number xxx.

Write out the contract and place it and your $5 in the Kitty at any meeting or gathering.

If you have accomplished this goal by Sept 12 evening meeting, you’ll get your $5 back. If not you will forfeit your $5 to the CPQG Kitty. Any money left in the Kitty at the end of the September 12 meeting will go to the general CPQG programming fund.

Please remember, this is all for fun. There are no quilt police in CPQG. If you need encouragement or motivation to get this quilt moving, perhaps this challenge will do it for you.

You may join this challenge anytime but the end date is fixed. Please leave this contract and your $5 with the kitty.

Wednesday Daytime Meeting - 1 PM - State College YMCA - One Block Wonders

Bobby M will be demonstrating One Block Wonder Quilts.  These are a version of “Stack and Whack” quilts using 6 panels that are stacked into layers and then cut into equilateral triangles to make hexagons. They involve purchasing 7 panels; 6 to “stack and whack” and one to actually use in the quilt, framing it with the hexagons made from the stack and whack process.

Take a look at some of the websites above and see if you think this might be something you might be interested in making. My presentation will be just a lecture, not a workshop. But if some of you are interested in making one, we can organize a workshop later in the spring.

Watch for sales of panels. Check out some online sources of panels such as:

Unloved fabric finds friends at the 3rd Wednesday afternoon at the YMCA

We spread out all over the small gym at the Y.  We used the floor as our design wall as teams of 2 or 3 chose orphan blocks and selections of donated fabric to build 50"x 60"quilt backs. If you have a WOMBAT (Waste Of Money and Batting) or just a UFO that might match the size of one of these that you would like to donate, please see LenoreC. 11 quit backs finished, 50”x 60”-ish; many people went home with almost-dones and some people even went home with a pile of fabric to continue the scrappy fun..

Hover over a picture to see the size.

UFO Fridays, embroidery, Comfort Covers, and banner updaters, OH MY!

Blue Course Community Church was busy on January 13. Machine embroidery people were working in one corner, and Comfort Covers was busy making fingerless fleece mitts in the other corner. We had text correctors, cutters, pinners, sewers, QC personnel, and trimmers. All told we made 52 pairs of fleece mitts that were delivered to Out of the Cold after the meeting. Big Thank You's go to Fran H, Sue Y, Lenore C, Lynn S, Nancy S, Jill W, Leslie D, Peggy R, and Peggy T.

If you want to come join in the fun Feb 10 we are making walker bags. See additional information in the newsletter.
