Request for help

My name is Alex Davenport. Currently I am pursuing my PhD in communication studies at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. Previously I attended James Madison University in Harrisonburg Virginia for both my BA & MA During that time (2007-2015) I was privileged to work with Mountain Justice on MTR related issues.

For my dissertation work, I hope to make a quilt memorializing Judy Bonds out of squares donated by members of the community. After I have made the quilt I plan to travel it along one of the routes of the Mountaintop Removal Roadshow; educating the audience about MTRJ Judy Bonds and other figures! and current organizing occurring in Appalachia. After I have traveled with the quilt and defended my dissertation I will donate the quilt to Coal River Mountain Watch.

If you are interested! please send a quilt square of any size to me (a good size recommendation, if you need one! is 10 "x 10"). I want everyone who wishes to be able to participate, so these squares can run the gamut So far I have talked to people about traditional quilt squares, fabric with appliqués, t-shirts, preexisting/altered materials, squares with messages in fabric paint/marker and more. Truly whichever medium you feel comfortable in, I would be happy to work with.

You can also send a letter (that you can choose to sign but do not need to) reflecting on Judy, or anything else you think fits with the project. Even if you do not send a letter you may choose to have your name associated with your quilt square or to remain anonymous! just let me know which you prefer. After receiving your square I will mail you papers confirming your participation in the project that you can keep if you wish.

My mailing address is 410 N Springer St, #2 Carbondale IL 62901 . I want to ensure that everyone who wants to contribute is able to and am more than happy to provide pre-paid postage. Please contact me if you would be interested in that option.

If you wish to participate please send your squares no later than December 18. If you want to donate but need a little more time, please let me know- making sure everyone who wants to participate can is very important to me.

If you have any questions, concerns, feedback) or would like to coordinate further on the project I can be contacted at davenpak@siu.edu or 571.243.9108.

My advisor, Dr. Jonathan Gray, may also be contacted at jmgray@siu.edu or 618.453.7570.

Recycling fabric

H&M website has information on a garment collection program. The company will take any textiles from old sheets, worn-out T-shirts to odd socks.  For one bag of garments, the person will receive a coupon for 10% off the next purchase.  The collection box is located next to the cash registers.  The store is located on Fraser Street right across from the Fraser Street parking garage.
If Scraps and Skeins can't use it, try H&M.

December Silent Auction and Date

Even though we skipped our auction fundraiser in 2018. make plans now to attend an donate to help fund your Guild.  Crafty items with quilty references are always welcome.  How about a barn quilt?  (I'd love one.) Maybe you (or someone you love) paints gourds or Christmas ornaments and could put some quilt blocks on small ones. Or maybe you have an embroidery machine and can make quilt labels. Maybe you have a stash you know you aren't ever going to use.
Be as creative as we know you are. Just don't put your treasures in such a safe place that you can't find it in December.
