2026 Challenge: Pick a Color, Any Color!

This year's challenge is to make a project using just one color family, letting value, print, and scale do the work color contrast usually does - any block, any pattern, any size, any skill level, and it doesn't even have to be a quilt. See the handout and slides that will be included in the upcoming October newsletter for guidance and some helpful resources. The color wheel will be out at every meeting for you to add your name, and finished projects will be presented at the June Picnic.

Pick a Color, Any Color Centre Pieces Quilt Guild — 2026 Challenge

Make a project out of one color family — you pick! With no color contrast to work with, your contrast has to come from value (tint, shade, tone), print (busy, directional, low-volume), scale (big vs. small), and texture. Get creative!

Rules

• Use only one color! That’s it!

• You can use neutrals, but I’d encourage you to find dark shades and light tints of your                   color instead;

• Any block, any pattern, any size, any skill level;

• Front only — backing, batting, and thread are free; binding is your call;

• Pick a color you love, a color you have a lot of, or a color you find challenging;

          • Doesn’t have to be a quilt, and quilts don’t have to be quilted and bound;

         • Sign up on the color wheel;

         • Present at the June Picnic for a chance to win a prize!

Tools & Fabric

    • Cell phone camera — apply a grayscale filter to compare values. Colored film (red or green,                   depending on your fabric), rulers, photocopy, color wheel.

    • Fabric: your stash first, then Scraps & Skeins, the Give Away Table, swap with a friend, or dye       your own.

Haven’t picked a color yet?

No rush — a lot of people wanted to go through their stash first, which is a great way to choose. The color wheel will be out at every meeting, so you can add your name whenever you’re ready, and you can always change your mind later.

Q & A

❓ Does it have to be pieced? No, any sewing technique is good (applique, etc.)

❓ How do you define a color family? This is not a strict rule. One option is to pick a base color and then work with variations on that (Red - deep red, maroon, pink). Second option, select a pizza slice wedge of the color wheel and work within that.

❓ Can I change my mind? Absolutely, sign up at any time, switch colors whenever you want, the color wheel is for engagement, not a binding contract :)
